Spoken Content (formerly Speech) is an Apple accessibility feature in iOS and iPadOS. It lets your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad read text aloud. It’s helpful if you have trouble reading small text or just when you’re multitasking.

In this detailed guide and tutorial, you’ll learn to activate Spoken Content on your iPhone and customize the feature to work the way you want.

Table of Contents

Accessing Your Spoken Content Settings on iPhone

To get your iPhone or iPad to read text aloud, you must first access your Spoken Content settings. To get to them:

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.

3. Under the Vision section, tap Spoken Content to view all available settings related to the feature.

The following sections walk you through how to use each accessibility setting within the Spoken Content screen.

Have Your iPhone Read Selected Text Out Aloud

Enable Speak Selection to set up your iPhone to read selected text aloud. You can then highlight text in documents and webpages and tap the Speak button on the pop-up menu to convert the text to speech.

Tip: Tap and hold a word to highlight it. Then, use the surrounding handles to highlight additional words, sentences, and paragraphs.

Have Your iPhone Speak Text on a Screen

You can also have your iPhone read the entire screen aloud by activating the toggle next to Speak Screen. You can then swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers, and the device will begin to speak whatever’s on the screen, starting from the top. Note that this does not work on the Lock Screen, Home Screen, and Control Center.

Use the playback controls on the Speech Controller to speed up or slow down the read speed, skip lines and sentences, and pause reading. You can also tap the Speak on Touch icon and tap any phrase or sentence to get your iPhone to start reading it.  If you do nothing, the Speech Controller will disappear.

With the Speak Screen option enabled, you can also get Siri to start speaking by saying, “Hey Siri, Speak Screen.”  Learn how to set up and configure Siri on iPhone.

Have the Speech Controller Always Show Up on Screen

You also can get the Speech Controller overlay to always stay on the screen. To do that, tap the Speech Controller option and activate the switch next to Show Controller.

You can then expand the Speak Controller and tap the Play icon to get your iPhone to start speaking whatever’s on the screen. Again, use the Previous and Next icons to move between lines and the Speed icon to increase or decrease the speed. Don’t forget to activate Speak on Touch to get the device to read whatever you touch.

By default, long-pressing the collapsed Speech Controller icon prompts your iPhone to start speaking text aloud, while double-tapping the icon switches it to Speak on Touch mode. You can change that using the Long Press and Double Tap options at the bottom of the Speech Controller screen.

Additionally, you can change the opacity of the Speech Controller by tapping Idle Opacity. Decreasing the value will make it less intrusive.

Have Your iPhone Highlight Text As It Speaks Aloud

Tap the Highlight Content option within the Spoken Content settings to customize how highlighting works as your iPhone speaks out text aloud.

You can set your iPhone to highlight individual words or sentences only, change the highlight style (underline or background color), and adjust the highlight color for words and sentences. Try out different combinations to determine what works for you the best.

Have Your iPhone Provide You With Typing Feedback

Spoken Content also allows your iPhone to speak text aloud as you type. Tap Typing Feedback to determine how you want to receive feedback. You can get your iPhone to speak individual characters (with a feedback delay), entire words, auto-corrections, and even predictive text.

Choose a Voice and Dialect For Spoken Content

Do you want to get your iPhone to read text aloud in a different voice? Tap Voices, and you get to switch between voices for each language that your iPhone speaks out aloud—e.g., English, French, Hindi, etc.

Modify the Speaking Rate on Your iPhone Add Custom Pronunciations as Your iPhone Speaks Aloud

If your iPhone mispronounces certain words, you can create a custom pronunciation. Tap Pronunciations, select the Plus button, type the word or phrase, and select the Microphone icon.

You must then speak the substitution aloud and pick the correct pronunciation after listening to each phonetic suggestion. Repeat for any other custom pronunciations you want to create.

Don’t Forget to Review Other Accessibility Options

VoiceOver: Get your iPhone to speak onscreen elements on the screen aloud by tapping on them.

Zoom: Magnifies the screen.

Display & Text Size: Increase the default text size.

Motion: Reduce motion to improve visibility.

Audio Descriptions: Get your iPhone to automatically speak audio descriptions in supported videos—e.g., Apple TV.

How To Get Around Strange Messages Bug That Crashes Your Iphone

An odd bug that lets ill-minded folk send you a message which causes your iPhone to respring has been making rounds.

In case you missed it, a very specific string of symbols and Arabic characters sent through iMessage or SMS sends an iPhone in an immediate respring, causing the device to crash and quickly reboot, as first noticed on Reddit.

It’s a serious issue which in some instances can break the Messages app on your iPhone so here are a few possible workaround solutions until Apple delivers a proper fix.

Understanding the bug

So-called “Unicode of Death,” the actual “bug” stems from the way Unicode decodes characters, causing the above string to decode to an infinitely repeating message.

What happens next is your iPhone’s memory gets overwhelmed in the process, causing the phone to respring. You don’t even have to open the message or receive a notification, it’s an insta-respring.

Having tried it out myself, I can safely report that the bug seems to work as described above. Having texted the offending message to myself, I immediately switched to the System Monitor app, a 99 cent download in the App Store, to check system resources.

Sure enough, I was able to watch RAM on my device go from around 400MB of free memory down to less than a hundred.

As soon as the amount of free RAM went below 50MB, my iPhone suddenly wigged out. Users who are jailbroken have reported that the code causes their iPhone to go into safe mode, which typically happens when the Springboard crashes.

What apps and iOS versions are affected?

Crashing seems to occur in iOS 8.1, iOS 8.2 and iOS 8.3 versions. The reportedly manifests itself in WhatsApp, too, though I couldn’t verify this at post time. According to some reports, the bug doesn’t crash the device if the person sent you the message while you were looking at the conversation with them.

Some people blame the bug on how banner notifications process the Unicode text. Apparently, the banner notification briefly attempts to present the incoming text and then gives up, crashing the device. Furthermore, the phone will reboot even if the message hits it while you’re on the Lock screen.

Possible ways to mitigate the issue

You may also want to set Show in Notification Center to None as some users claim the issue immediately restarts their device after they try to pull up the text from the Notification Center.

I wouldn’t recommend sending the offending message without the “effective” and “Power” because Messages will break and you will no longer be able to access it. As MacRumors explained, if Messages was opened at a list view, the app crashes automatically when you try to open it.

“If it was opened to the conversation where you received the message, the app will open, but attempting to go to another conversation causes Messages to crash,” explains the publication.

Another Reddit thread offers a workaround solution which involves opening the Photos app to send a random photo to the person who texted you the message, then going into iMessage and deleting the conversation.

If you still can’t access Messages, or find yourself stuck in the conversation, replying to the original message or sending a message to yourself fixes the problem.

Fortunately, you can ask Siri to send a message to yourself. Another method involves opening the Notes app, creating a new note and sending it via Messages to yourself through the Share sheet.

This should clear away the malicious message.

Finally, try tapping and holding on any individual bubble in the conversation until the menu appears. Now choose More and then Delete All at the top of the screen. This should purge all of the offending text and keep the Messages app from crashing.

There are a couple jailbreak tweaks available that will help prevent Effective Power from affecting your device to begin with.

This will enable the Unknown Senders Filter in Messages. You will still receive messages from people not in your address book, they’ll just go to the Unknown Senders section in Messages and you won’t receive alerts for these.

Apple told TechCrunch it’s aware of the problem and working on a fix.

“We are aware of an iMessage issue caused by a specific series of Unicode characters and we will make a fix available in a software update,” said an Apple spokesperson.

Why You Can’t Afford Not To Read…

Transcript:

Today I want to focus on something many successful people do – which is reading. The reason I want to focus on reading is because I’m finding my personal circle of friends smaller and smaller in terms of those who read. Now, that’s not to knock them because many of them are on a great path to success. But I do feel like they’re missing out on something special. Potentially something that could help speed up their journey to where they want to go.

Brazilian professor Paulo Freire says this about reading: “Reading is not exhausted merely by decoding the written word or written language, but rather anticipated by and extending into knowledge of the world. Reading the world precedes reading the word, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined. The understanding attained by critical reading of a text implies perceiving the relationship between text and context.”

Reading has proven to create a greater empathy and understanding of the world. In today’s global landscape, this because ultra important, in my mind at least. And it saddens me when I hear people abandoning the act of reading all together. Here’s some statistics on reading as reported by PEW Research.

About 72% of American adults read a book in 2023. This represents a gradual decline over the last 5 years – in 2011 the percentage was 79. Mind you even these stats are somewhat skewed because of that 72% there’s a large contingency of people who reported to reading “one book, in part.” This makes it very unclear how many actually finished.

In my earlier episode called It’s Not What You Know, It’s What You Do When You Don’t Know, I showcase strategies for overcoming the moments in life when we’re stuck on a problem or just want to learn a new skill. If that’s you, why wouldn’t you use the wonderful resource that is books to obtain this information? More often than not, books offer the exact solutions we’re looking for. And I would argue that even when you’re creating something new and revolutionary, having some solid ideas from the past’s great thinkers will help. For example, How Google Works and Platform Revolution were extremely eye-opening for me when it came to how AfterBuzz TV should continue in its growth.

Let me highlight the other benefits of reading. More than like you’re not a child watching this, but if you have children, studies indicate that reading for pleasure makes a huge difference in a kid’s educational performance. Doing so increases their test scores while broadening their vocabulary and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, reading is more effective at a child’s progression in school than their social or economic background.

Other benefits, the ones that extend to everyone, are:

Imagination and creativity,

Focus and concentration,

Improvement in memory,

Communication,

Cheap or free entertainment,

Cheap or free education,

Gaining experience from other people,

Creates bonds between you and the author as well as other people who you can connect with on the ideas and themes of the book

Language development,

Fluency,

Exposure to new ideas and concepts,

Connects your brain and enhances concentration, and

Improves self-esteem because it highlights that you don’t give up.

Furthermore, reading is a fundamental function within society – a vital aspect to landing a good job. There’s applications to read and fill out, memos to read, reports to analyze and so on. Additionally, I’m willing to bet if it’s a job you really want to pursue, at some point you’ll be tasked to write a report or put together a presentation of your own. Maybe even give a speech. As Stephen King says, “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”

You might be able to put something together but it’ll take you much longer and may not reflect what you truly want to pen to paper.

Here’s another perspective as to the importance of reading. Are you familiar with the saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” The reason that saying holds true is because ideas written down have altered mankind – for better or worse. Reading builds on good ideas and exposes the bad ideas before they bring about destruction. Reading arms us in this way against the world. That may seem like hyperbole but look at certain governments of past and present. Reading is the reason governments hate free and honest communication. Illiterate people are controllable because they can’t think different thoughts other than those presented to them. And that is truly dangerous.

Here’s a statistic for you – most CEOs, and I use them because objectively we’d look at any CEO as successful, read 52 books a year. That may seem daunting especially if you haven’t been in the habit of reading. That’s okay. You don’t have to start with 52 a year. Just improve little by little. Read daily and see how far that gets you. Instead of checking social media every time you have a moment of down time, bust out a book. You’d be surprised how many pages you can read just through this act alone. Many people supplement books with audio books, that way they can continue the book while in their car driving to work and then later on pick up in the actual book where they left off. This allows them to speed through books. Nothing wrong with that. I do it and encourage it.

FYI, I’ve included a link to an article on how you too can read 52 books a year. It’s from chúng tôi and I highly recommend you read it. Pun intended.

If you’re looking for recommendations to begin, here’s a list of the books that have impacted me the most in my life.

When I was just hitting my teenage years, I was obsessed with The Matrix films. In fact, I even parodied them through my own videos. My obsession with the movies was in large part the action, but it was also because of the ideas presented in those movies. And yes, that includes both Reloaded and Revolutions. This lead me to read a book called Beyond the Matrix. That book took the ideas of those movies and explained them so wonderfully. I highly recommend it, whether you’ve seen the movies or not.

Another book I recommend is called The Way of the Peaceful Warrior. When you read it you’ll realize how aptly titled it actually is. Certainly I had that epiphany while reading it at the age of 16. I was in Slovakia, where my family is from, and finished the book. I remember getting on my bike and just going nowhere in particular feeling like I understood the world. Little did I know there was lots for me left to learn, but nonetheless the book was extremely helpful in progressing my life forward.

When I got to college a book that was recommended to me by my mentor Robert Patton-Spruill was Rebel Without a Crew. For fans of this series, you’ll know that I adore Robert Rodriguez as a filmmaker. This is a book he wrote about his first feature film El Mariachi. He chronicles how he made the entire film from start to finish for only $7,000 dollars. What was wonderful about it is it dispelled all the myths of movie making, especially the need for large budgets and large crews. Even if you’re not a filmmaker, there’s something to be gained by reading it.

Another book I read during college, actually it’s a series of two books, is called The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet. And yes, it’s about Winnie the Pooh and his Hundred Acre Wood friends. The two books use these characters to highlight the principles of Taoism rather well. It’s a fast and easy read but the knowledge is invaluable. Wonderful read for both adults and children. In fact, I read it once a year.

A book that I didn’t read until I was 28 was Tony Robbin’s Money: Master the Game. I wish I read it as soon as it came out. Everyone of us needs financial stability in our lives. And this is the perfect roadmap to achieving it. I can’t thank Tony enough for writing it and also thank you to AfterBuzz TV founders Keven Undergaro and Maria Menounos for suggesting it to me. It changed my life. Please, whether you’re young or old or somewhere in between, do yourself a favor and read this book. It may help you to start with Tony’s book Unshakeable first, which is a shortened version of this book. That’ll give you enough concepts to work with and will make you thirst for the finer details on what the book presents, which Money: Master the Game offers.

A lot of these recommendations are non-fiction books, I understand. Note that I also do enjoy fiction greatly, whether it’s Ham on Rye, The Golden Compass, The Princess Bride, The Graveyard Book, Time Traveler’s Wife, The Prestige and so on.

Another tip, since a lot of you are TV fans, you’d be surprised how many of your favorite TV shows come from books. Get to know the source material by reading the books that have formed your favorite TV shows.

If it’s education you’re seeking though, I understand certain people do learn better from videos. I have nothing against those. I just encourage you to read a little more, that’s all. Here’s some great YouTube channels I do recommend for learning: Fightmediocrity, Create Something, Just Write and any TED talk video.

To help reinforce the importance of reading, here’s some quotes I really love.

– Groucho Marx

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” – Walt Disney

“There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.” – Marcel Proust

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” – Margaret Fuller

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” – Neil Gaiman

“If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.” – Roald Dahl

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” – Albert Einstein

How To Get The Style Of Current Selection In Text Using Fabricjs?

In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to get the style of current selection of Text using FabricJS. We can display text on canvas by adding an instance of fabric.Text. Not only does it allow us to move, scale and change the dimensions of the text but it also provides additional functionality like text alignment, text decoration, line height which can be obtained by the properties textAlign, underline and lineHeight respectively. We can also find the style of current selection by using the getSelectionStyles method.

Syntax getSelectionStyles(startIndexopt, endIndexopt, completeopt) Parameters

startIndexopt − This parameter accepts a Number which denotes the start index to get the styles at.

endIndexopt − This parameter accepts a Number which denotes the end index to get the styles at.

completeopt − This parameter accepts a Boolean value which decides whether to get full styles or not.

Example 1

How To Factory Reset Your Iphone

Whether you have lost your iPhone, are switching to a new smartphone, or perhaps passing on your existing iOS device to a friend or family member, it is important to learn how to factory reset your iPhone. While the process to factory reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch is fairly straightforward, follow the steps in this guide to securely back up and erase the sensitive information stored on your device.

Note: if you’re looking to factory reset your Mac instead, we can help!

How to Back Up the Data on Your iPhone

If you need to migrate the data on your existing iPhone to a new iPhone, you will need to create a copy or backup of all of the information on your phone. You can do this using a wired connection to a Mac/PC or wirelessly via iCloud.

Back Up Your iPhone Using iCloud (Wireless Backup)

Locate and open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Tap on the Apple ID menu.

Select “iCloud” from the list of menu options.

Ensure that the switch to the right of “Back Up This iPhone” is enabled, then tap “Back Up Now” to initiate a backup.

Tip: learn how to use iCloud Keychain on Windows in this tutorial.

Back Up Your iPhone Using a Mac/PC (Wired Backup)

Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC using a lighting to USB or lighting to USB-C cable.

Tip: having trouble identifying which cable to use? Check out our quick video guide to learn how to tell the difference between USB-C and USB 3 vs Thunderbolt.

How to Factory Reset Your iPhone

Trading in your iPhone or looking to start anew? Here is how to erase all of the content and settings on your iPhone before you hand it over to be reused or recycled:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Tap “General” from the menu.

Scroll down and select “Transfer or Reset iPhone.”

On the next screen, tap on “Erase All Content and Settings”.

Your iPhone will display an at-a-glance breakdown of all the personal data that will be removed if you choose to proceed, including any eSIM service plans. Tap “Continue” to confirm. You will be asked to sign out of your Apple ID.

Good to know: this tutorial can help you secure your data and privacy on your IPhone.

How to Remotely Factory Reset Your iPhone

If your iPhone is stolen or you lose it, you may not have direct access to your iPhone, but you can remotely wipe it with a factory reset via the Find My app.

Open the Find My app on another Mac, iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch.

Tap on the red “Erase This Device” button.

When and How To Disable Find My

When you set up Find My on an Apple device, the Activation Lock security feature is automatically enabled, preventing bad actors from reactivating your device following a factory reset. Every time an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch, or Mac that has an Apple T2 security chip or Apple silicon is activated or recovered, the device contacts Apple to check whether Activation Lock is turned on.

If you plan on trading in your iPhone or lending it to someone else, you will need to disable Find My iPhone to automatically disable Activation Lock. This ensures that the new owner will not need to enter the old owner’s Apple ID credentials to operate the device. Follow the steps below to disable Find My and Activation Lock on your iPhone:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Tap on the Apple ID menu.

Select “Find My” from the list of menu options.

Tap on “Find My iPhone.”

On the next screen, ensure that the toggle switch to the right of “Find My iPhone” is disabled. You will be asked to enter your Apple ID credentials before you can turn off Find My.

Frequently Asked Questions What do I do if I need to erase my iPad?

The same workflow will work for users looking to erase all content and settings on an iPad. Many times, the same instructions will work for both iPhone and iPad, such as this tutorial on how to customize your iPhone or iPad Lock Screen.

What are my options if I forget the passcode for my iPhone?

If you forget your iPhone passcode, you will need to erase all of the information on your iPhone, in a process called “restoring,” to set up and use your iPhone again. Unfortunately, you will lose any data that you had on your iPhone that has not been backed up to iCloud, including contacts, calendar events, notes, etc. Before you restore your iPhone, you will need to put it into recovery mode. The workflow for activating recovery mode on every model of iPhone can be found in our guide on how to hard reset your iPhone and iPad.

If I factory reset my iPhone, does it delete my cell service plan with my provider?

No. Factory resetting your iPhone does not cancel your cellular plan with your current service provider. However, you may need to transfer the SIM card from your existing phone to a new one to transfer your cellular plan. Most modern smartphones, including the iPhone XS and newer, support eSIM, which allows you to set up and configure cell service without the need for a physical SIM card. You can take a look at our guide to discover how to transfer and activate an eSIM on iPhone 14.

How Freshness Works (And How To Get It To Work For You)

Will publishing new articles regularly or updating old blog posts help you rank better?

Maybe, but not just by changing the date or frequency.

Google accounts for “hacks” like this.

In this article, we will discuss how the factors behind freshness affect your rank.

What Is Freshness?

When marketers talk about content freshness, they are referencing an algorithm update from 2023.

Google’s Freshness Update was a significant algorithm update that introduced time as a relevance indicator, making the search results more responsive to user intent.

The update allowed Google to surface trending, regular, or frequently updated content.

People often misunderstand the Freshness update, believing it prioritizes recent publication dates in raking results.

Unfortunately, this is an oversimplification and has fueled multiple viral “hacks” like mass creating content or updating publication dates as good SEO strategies.

So, I’m going to explain why freshness doesn’t mean what you think it means and then explain how to get freshness to work for you.

Freshness Vs. Frequency

Frequency is often confused with freshness.

Frequency is the rate at which you publish content, whereas freshness is the date a page was originally published.

Posting content frequently will help your site get crawled more often out of necessity – hat tip to the 2023 Google Caffeine update, which made this (freshness) all possible.

But, indexing is not ranking.

While the frequency may increase how often Google checks your website, it is not the same as freshness and is not a ranking factor.

John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google, confirmed this in a tweet.

When asked whether Google’s algorithms take posting frequency into account, he responded that they do not.

Take, for example, the Backlinko website.

Brian Dean posts sporadically – about six times in 2023 – and has only published one article (so far) in 2023.

Yet, the website still ranks in the top three for 3,850 non-branded keywords.

How Does Google Determine Publication Date?

Google looks at many things when determining a publication date of a webpage – including, but not limited to, the dates you provide or dates provided through structured markup.

But, Google does not rely on just one thing because all factors have the potential to go wrong.

What if a publisher doesn’t provide a clear date?

Or, what if the structured data on the page is missing or incorrect?

Google looks at several factors, not just dates provided, to determine when a page was published or significantly updated.

Significantly updated is an important distinction.

Below are Google’s webmaster guidelines for news (as it’s the most affected).

This image shows that Google clearly states not to artificially freshen a story without adding significant information or compelling reason to give it a fresh date and time.

Does The Publication Date Matter?

Look at SEO, for example. It is a fairly volatile industry with many moving parts, algorithm updates, and experts publishing their findings to the interwebs en masse.

You may think that SEO-related queries would certainly demand freshness.

Let’s search [SEO audit].

Nothing too surprising.

You’ll see articles from 2023, 2023, and 2023.

And then a Wordstream article with a 2023 date in the SERP (search engine results page).

You can see that Google is using other factors to determine the publication date of a page.

You see, Wordstream tried to freshen this page by publishing an artificially updated publication date.

Regardless, it still ranks on the first page. Maybe Google doesn’t consider the query [SEO audit] to deserve freshness.

Let’s search [SEO trends].

See a difference?

There are no articles up to late 2023 and 2023.

An article on the first page doesn’t even list the date. It’s just how many days ago the article was published.

Why is this happening?

An article from 2023 would be a horrible search result for the search query [SEO trends].

Google understands people want to know the latest trends, not outdated ones, and tries to match the results to fit the user’s intent.

What Types Of Queries Does Freshness Apply To?

In its official post about the update, Google specifies three types of queries that freshness algorithms apply to: recent events (e.g., natural disasters), regularly recurring events (e.g., sports scores), and frequently updated topics (e.g., product reviews).

For example, let’s look at the query [how to build a standing desk].

Google understands this as an informational (how-to) query and returns video search results from 2023 and site links from as far back as 2012.

But, if I search for [best standing desk].

Not a single site link on page 1 is more than two months old. Someone searching for [best standing desk] likely wants to read a product review, so freshness becomes important to the user experience.

Final Thoughts

Google doesn’t care how frequently you post or if you keep changing the date.

Does that mean you should stop updating old articles?

No!

Has something changed since you first wrote the article?

Update it and make the edits visible so that readers can see the historical view of events.

If you notice that Google begins displaying images, videos, or rich results in the SERP for your target keyword – update how you’re presenting the content.
